richACT School Scheme

2025, mixed media, size variable

My work richACT Programme combines design, installation, and satirical graphics to critically examine how the emphasis on monetary value in education can hinder childhood creativity. I construct a highly materialistic society where value is strictly quantified, prompting the question: What are the consequences when curiosity and imagination are discouraged?

I employ white porcelain piggy banks, embroidered fail badges, diaries, and administrative typography, alongside performative protocols such as weekly audits, rules, and penalties, to simulate an official project. The graphic elements appropriates those of government documentation to blur the boundaries between my constructed world and reality. Inspired by Hong Kong artist Wong Ping’ s use of humour and sarcasm to critique societal issues, I incorporate text-driven provocations using local idioms, such as ‘Better to Give Birth to Char Siu than You’ (生舊叉燒好過生你), to intensify the comment on value.

In the school programme, I address the societal, parental, and institutional pressures that compel children to equate personal worth with income and reputation. The diary tracks mandatory earnings, teachers crack a customizable piggy bank every Monday to audit savings, and Fail Badges record non-compliance. Handmade drawings do not improve grades, highlighting the futility of aesthetic effort within a commercialised rubric and underscoring the satirical nature of my practice.
