Memory

2022, chair remaking, 80 x 60 x 45 cm

This artwork is called Memory. It originally was my grandmother's chair. She used to sit on it while she was watching television at home. However, the chair had worn out, and we recently moved our home; therefore, she decided to throw it away. By coincidence, we have to make a chair, so I have decided to give this precious chair a second life. I first removed all the bamboo from the worn-out parts, for example, the seat and the armrest. The chair belongs to Grandma, so I want to make a link between Grandma and me through this particular chair. She always knits a scarf for me every winter. For that reason, I have considered using knitting wool; however, the seat would be extremely unstable if made from this material. By the end, I use hemp rope, which is a rather resistant material, and it can form a stronger structure. I use the rope to weave the seat and the chair arm. The weave pattern reminds me of the scarf my grandma used to knit for me.
